Discussion Longing for a Border dedicated to young artists in the context of contemporary photograph

As part of Riga Photography Biennial Off-Year 2017 programme: Discussion "Longing for a Border" dedicated to young artists in the context of contemporary photography and Adam Mazur’s lecture ""What Does a Woman Want?" Thoughts on the New Polish Photography". Discussion Longing for a Border dedicated to young artists in the context of contemporary photography.

Photography as a tool for visual communication is utilised within various art disciplines, although not everyone using this medium associates themselves with the field of photography. Identification with a certain discipline of art, even for multidisciplinary artists, inevitably brings about questions about the boundaries of the medium.

Is professional membership determined by approaches and thinking or is it simply about longing to have clearly set boundaries for one’s identity? What are the aims and visions that drive new photographers towards the art of photography and what are the observations and expectations held by educators, curators and representatives from various arts institutions? These and other questions will be expanded and explored as part of the discussion Longing for a Border as part of Riga Photography Biennial Off-Year 2017 programme: http://rpbiennial.com/program-2017.html

Adam Mazur’s lecture ""What Does a Woman Want?" Thoughts on the New Polish Photography" by Adam Mazur (PL), researcher of Polish contemporary photography, is dedicated to emerging Polish female photographers and the currently dominant feministic view in art.

Yulia Krivich, Weronika Lawniczak, Joanna Piotrowska, Wiktoria Wojciechowska and Marta Zgierska are among some of the most noticeable contemporary emerging Polish artists. What is it, the photography created by these young women and others? What distinguishes it and makes it so intriguing and inspiring? What do women see and how do they see it? Finally, and more fundamentally, what do they actually want from the public, from photography and from art? Adam Mazur’s (PL) visually enhanced lecture, supplemented with sticking examples of work, will present his interpretation of the relationship between female artists and the world of photography. The lecture is held as part of Riga Photography Biennial Off-Year 2017 programme: http://rpbiennial.com/program-2017.html

In addition, his essay on the same subject will feature in a special Riga Photography Biennial 2017 publication.

Adam Mazur works as an art critic, curator and editor-in-chief of Szum Magazine. During the years 2002-2013 he worked at the Centre for Contemporary Art at Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw, and curated several exhibitions. Published the books Histories of Photography in Poland 1839-2009 (2010), New Phenomena in Polish Photography after 2000 (2012), among others. In 2013 he established a research platform focusing on Polish photo books. His main interests are contemporary art and documentary photography.
