Contemporary Art Festival Survival Kit 5: Slow Revolution

Curated by Solvita Krese

September 5 - September 15, 2013

Lāčplēša Street 60, Riga

Revolution as a collective activity usually occurs in a peripheral zone - territorial, ideological, economic or political - and aims at fundamentally changing the system dictated by the dominant force that is incapable or disinterested in securing public needs. Often, small gestures, interventions in the public space, partisan strategies, and involvement of inhabitants turn into strong impulses that can cause quite a significant change. The festival "Survival Kit 5" addressed the slow revolution that actualized marginality, reversing positions of power and questioning the dominance of the center.

What can artists, art organisations and neighbourhood residents existing in this periphery of power do in this era of flourishing civic engagement? What kind of arms and tools can be used? What do we want to change in the current situation?

Throughout the festival, the ambitious exhibition, which was on display at Lāčplēša Street 60, was complemented by a series of events that invited us to think about the role of the individual in the system, as well as what the artist, art organizations and neighborhood residents, being on the periphery of power, can do in this era of booming civic activity. Artists, curators, art institution representatives and activists staged, analysed, studied and presented various marginal positions strategies and tactics, through a series of discursive events.

Foreign artists in the festival include names like The Yes Men from the USA, Johanna Billing from Sweden, Minna L. Henriksson from Finland, Gabriel Lester from the Netherlands, Harun Farocki from Germany, Oliver Ressler from Austria, Ane Hjort Guttu from Norway, Sasha Kurmaz from Ukraine, etc. .
