Here...?
Videoinstallation and objects
What have you learnt from the changes in recent years in Latvia and the world?
One learns things not just during a crisis, but every day from the moment of birth, we get small daily lessons. If we look at history, we see that — just like waves on the sea — the crisis has recurred a number of times. And just like around 1935, the resources for culture were cut, just like now... In the same way there should be a rise, back to the middle... higher–lower. The survival strategy is not to succumb to panic and to try to observe.
How does your project in SURVIVAL KIT 2 fit in with the festival theme?
I try to observe — I do that in my art work Te...? and in life. To observe, being on the inside and from the margins. What do those who arrive say and see, and what do the locals see? That’s why there are two tables, one is a video, where foreigners are talking; the second is an object in the exhibition, where I’d like to see exhibition visitors with their opinions and discussions. People are welcome to come for a cup of tea with their opinions, as many of us have experienced socialism and now capitalism, maybe we can find some new hybrid system for how to live.
Why haven’t you left yet?
But who will then observe and record?
