What have you learnt from the changes in Latvia and globally in the last few years?

Evidently this question is pertinent for those who weren’t at a rational age in the „distant 90s”. Or those who have forgotten them. Thus, the lesson is: don’t forget. (In the 1990s people installed „Godmanis heaters” in their apartments (including me), new designers were occasionally paid 30 Lats a month and the water supply on the sixth floor only worked at nights. Many survived regardless.)

How does your project for SURVIVAL KIT 2 relate to the festival theme?

Survival strategies can be found in the 1990s, the 1900s and in 900 BC. I’m going to use ancient traditions in the panic and anger which has built up – mummer’s masks, bears which will parade through town, wafting smoke into the blue or not so blue skies. It will be therapeutic, not just for me. I’m going to invite others to join me in their mummer’s costumes.

Why haven’t you left Latvia?

Which is more cowardly? To flee, because you have no courage to stay, or to stay, because you have no courage to flee? “That which changes, will survive” – it is of no significance whether I change here or elsewhere.
