What have you learned from the changes in Latvia and worldwide in recent years?
Over the last two years I’ve increasingly come to believe that in any job, your personal attitude and communication skills are key. The system of values in Latvian society has changed radically: we’ve realised that in reality there are many things that you can do by coming to an agreement; all you need to do is take action and find alternative solutions.
What is the connection between your SURVIVAL KIT2 project and the festival theme?
Just like last year in SURVIVAL KIT project Lesson No 13, this time I’ve also created my work drawing inspiration from the dominant state of mind in society. Whereas a year ago it was mostly aggression, anger and hatred for the ruling power, this year it is a belief that after losing our way in a dark forest, we can now look forward to the light at the end of the tunnel. However, will this light at the end of tunnel which we’re anticipating, turn out to be that which we need?
Why haven’t you left yet?
I have been studying in London for the past two years, so I only visit Riga during my holidays. The thing that has always attracted me to Riga is its apprehensibility. Due to its size and number of inhabitants Riga is ideal for living. Of course, I’m also very accustomed to this city, Riga is my hometown and it is much easier to launch projects here because I’m familiar with the environment, as well as the mentality of people. However, I do feel the lack of the challenge and worldview which I have in London. That is also one of the main reasons why I’m among the “those who’ve left”.
