Workshop "The Internet of Things"

By Rob van Kranenburg

The Internet of Things (IOT) is a vision. It proposes that by making things smart and connecting them via internet there can be new groundbreaking solutions for what used to be macro economic issues: energy (coupling smart meters, production of goods), communication (open content, software, hardware and networks). Yet currently IOT applications are rolled out from negative arguments only.

For logistics, it is anti-theft. For e-health it is the lack of human personnel that requires the building of smart houses. From a policy view it is the ensuring of safety, control and surveillance in public space. For retail it is shelf space management.

In his workshop Internet of Things Rob van Kranenburg wants to make scenarios for a positive potentialities of IOT for social, communicative and economic developments.

Therefore we will with a personal history of locative media & hybrid spaces, discuss the latest tools and applications, and the latest trends: from interaction to resonance; from stand alone to ecology; from efficiency to abundance; from fear to joy; from egoism to solidarity. Our broader question for future research is in how far these trends that are global could affect planning and large architectural projects: mobility, transport (mapping on different data, construction and community co design.

People working/studying in the field of design, architecture, urban planning, IT, art, and all interested in the subject are welcome to participate.

Workshop was organized within project Development of new media art education in Liepaja (cooperation arrangement nr. LV0086). The project is financed by the Europe Economic Area and Norwegian bilateral Financial mechanism, as well as Liepaja City Council.
