Fundamental Element
Sculpture, animations, 2011
In democratic societies decisions are made by the majority. When most politically active citizens are honest, responsible and sensible, their political decisions will also be honest, responsible and sensible. The project “Fundamental element” shows one citizen a retired woman, who is clever, honest and analytical and takes an active part in social processes. The message is that the fundamental value and fundamental element of a healthy, vital and growing society is the ‘sensible human’ – an individual possessing reason and willing to think. And so, the role of the main character is given to a middle-aged woman who understands causal relationships. She is a citizen of Latvia, who believes that political parties cannot be dependent on private donations. (A.B.)

With his work Bikše offers interpretations of various social and political themes, current topicalities, history and ideologies. His means of communication with the audience are irony and provocation; he does not try to avoid embarrassing themes or “wrong” characters.
