Aija Bley

Communists

Video installation, 2011

One of the main ideological driving forces of the Soviet Union was the promise that its people would be living under Communism in the very near future – literally within the next few years. This promise was made by Stalin, Khrushchev, Brezhnev and others. Communism is an ideal life in an ideal society. Everyone is equal, prosperity abounds. Everyone works according to their ability and receives according to their needs. People were ready to put up with a lot to attain this ideal world. But despite labour victories and surpassed five-year and other targets, the ideal world grew ever more distant with each passing year. The renewal of independence put an end to the dream of an ideal and just world. But 85-year-old Vera Semyonovna is a devout communist. She still believes and keeps waiting. (A.B.)
