Matilde Brauna (revival)
Paintings, 2011
Matilde Brauna lived her whole life at Pitrags – as small seaside village. She never went to Riga or anywhere else. She painted her house pink because it was a nice, cheerful colour and , besides, the local shop had run out of all colours of paint except pink. Every single day she knew the time of the sunset (on August 18 – at 22.55), but she never went to watch it. She was heartbreakingly jealous of her friend’s violet headscarf, because she knew she would never get hold of such beauty (her friend’s relatives had brought the item from Riga). While listening to the news on the radio, she always did some handicrafts. Initially she crocheted small table cloths and serviettes, later – when she had no thread at hand, but did not want to miss the news – Matilde used whatever there was. And so the Objects of Brauna came to be. Matilde Brauna loved to imagine herself dancing, she always watched dance festivals on TV- both live broadcasts and reruns.
Matilde lived a happy and harmonious life for 87 years.
