Coloured Metal
Installation, 2011
One of the things we have on us daily is money. Its material form is banknotes and coins. Banknotes are coloured and we are usually aware of them, i.e. they are of sufficient value for us to know exactly how many of them we possess and where we store them. Coins have little value. Even though they are decorated with a variety of images they are constantly neglected – they have turned into one-colour, or sooner – non-colour objects with the sole practical and commonplace purpose to serve as a means to make small purchases. Besides, these days, the role of money in its material form is decreasing. More trust is put into virtual money, even though it exists only in computer memory or in our thoughts. Quite paradoxically – virtual money, intangible as it is, has more value than the material version. We want to bestow coins with a new meaning, add colour to them and encourage people to view them with ‘different, more impractical, eyes’. (B.Z., K.U.)
