Rix Vexation (Hysteria as a Starting Point)

Installation, performance, 2011

This is a project of Latvian and German artists exploring the socio-cultural context of Survival Kit 3 through a hysteria discourse. In addition to being an epidemic in society, hysteria is also a semiotic and aesthetic phenomenon. It can be perceived as a bodily language, a physical form of expression. The symptoms here function as part of a system of codes to communicate subjective and cultural (dis-)content. On the one hand this research based project provides a common ground for thoughts and communication. On the other hand the subject of hysteria is also a place of friction: there is always a ‘formless’ zone to be encountered here - something that cannot entirely be translated into a formal language of scientific discourse. The energies which are set free throughout this transformative process will be the main focus of the exhibition.
