Playback
Installation, 2011
Emma Smith presented PLAYBACK: a participatory game to exchange tacit knowledge and intuited response to place. The game was presented as a box set, created especially for this event, and included a series of monologue scripts in Latvian, Russian, Belarusian, Polish and Ukranian to be played by participants.
The game took the form of a read through where all players were simultaneously the performer and the audience, reading the scripts in conversation with one another. The game was one of embodiment and communication where each player places themselves in the position of the character in their story, which they then attempt to communicate to the group. Each time the game was played a new play was created.
Emma Smith was brought to SURVIVAL KIT by THE SHOWROOM, a contemporary art space in London that is focused on a collaborative and process-driven approach to production, be that artwork, exhibitions, discussions, publications, knowledge and relationships.
