Very many questions

Interactive installation, 2009

“Why is there a disaster in our country?” This famous question posed by Jānis Domburs is quite poetic in a typically Latvian way. And what I’m presenting here is the survival kit of the average Latvian a few hundred years back in history. At that time the average inhabitant of this territory was a farmer and he certainly didn’t have access to a drugstore or a psychotherapist’s services, but he always did have a magic formula in mind to protect himself against any harm.

We can study the teachings of Castaneda from South America or follow the principles of feng shui based on the Chinese cult of the dead, but why are we still unfamiliar with the practices used by our closest ancestors to secure themselves against all troubles? Do the ancient words only promote self-suggestion – is it all in our heads? Or do they actually have an impact on reality? How do these formulas work? Where does strength lie – in our rational or irrational perception of the world?

P.S. A new proposal for Latvian Dharma or the Wheel of Renewal of the World Order.
