Text collage, 2006-2009
From time to time I read newspapers and cut out words, phrases or sentences that attract my eye; those that I like or find funny or awkward. What you need is a knife for cutting the newspapers and white A4 paper. You can arrange the words any way you like. You only need glue to keep them together. In this way an economically created text is born out of words that have already been used in another context. At the moment I decide to put together a quotation collage I have no idea about the plot and its twists and turns. The story is created by picking and combining items that have been previously intentionally collected. In the process of collecting these words the intention is usually on the level of enthusiastic entertainment. I propose different versions of text to myself and then I choose one, relying on my heart’s feeling. Punctuation marks are not important, only the observation of the ever-volatile relations between delight and suffering. So without any intention I turn to the inhabitants and tools of the garden of life, the world of animals, the weather and natural phenomena, moods through a colour wheel, a huge need to laugh, or the relationships between household items and such – where everything has certain qualities and an inner life. Such conversations with myself happen not only when looking for something but also in the hope of finding something not just useful but also essential.
