Spatial installation (photo, objects). Digital colour print on paper
Various dimensions

Romans Korovins’ (1973) characteristic style is recognisable irrespective of the medium in which he works. His arsenal of artistic expression includes painting, photography and video; his expositions also frequently include sculptures derived from their environs via the techniques of assemblage and the readymade, as well as in situ drawings and writings. The artist typically records everyday things and objects found in his surroundings, offering seemingly playful, occasionally absurd depictions of everyday situations. The acquired images are grouped in pairs and sets, and the sets into sequences, creating new meanings through their mutual interplay. The border between the real and the unreal becomes blurred, opening the space for imagination.

Garumzīme (“Length Mark”) is a spatial installation about the poetic nature of signs and symbols. The artist’s wish is to return to an original condition from which it is possible to look at fixed symbols and signs from an innocent and open perspective, as if seeing them for the first time. This would in turn make it possible to see these elements in their human dimension rather than as politically implicated and therefore untouchable. There are worldly images that document human existence and characterise human activity, but there are also images on another level, which can be compared to icons. They do not have to be serious; they can be funny, poetic, dramatic or emotional. The artist’s main message: it is possible to look at the world on a different level and with love.
