Vladimir Tomic

Time We Lost
2017

HD/DV video, 15"

Vladimir Tomic’s (1980) art films belong to the field of contemporary art as well as to that of experimental documentary. The main themes in his productions relate to very universal and human tensions, such as the tension between individual identity and the changing structure of society. Tomic’s approach to his art is always based on his own personal experiences or on first-hand observation led by empathy. Tomic is originally from Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. He graduated with honours from The Danish Royal Academy of Fine Arts and is now based in Copenhagen.

By the time the conflict in Bosnia-Herzegovina ended in November 1995, more than 3 million people from the region had been displaced. Many were separated from family members, and as time passed, they continued to live far away from one another. It is in this context that a funeral home in Sarajevo has come to provide an online service for Bosnians abroad who are prevented from attending the funeral of a relative. Despite the dramatic history preceding it, the video’s approach to the torn reality of the individual concerned and of all the generations involved is neutral and discretely emotional.
