The key venue of Survival Kit 8 was C. C. von Stritzky’s villa, which after long years of abandonment currently experienced a revival and has become a new cultural hotspot in the city.

Pauls Stradins Museum for History of Medicine

The museum exposition formed both part of the festival and a framework for certain works of art and events, spatially representing the potential points of interaction between Western and Eastern models of medicine as well as the direction of thought in general.

The Pauls Stradins Museum for History of Medicine in Riga was founded in 1957 after one of the most distinguished physicians in Latvia, Pauls Stradins (1896–1958), bequeathed his private collection to the state. Pursuant to the founder’s intention, the museum encompasses the history of medicine of the entire world, not only Latvia. The museum collection is continuously expanded, and currently it has more than 203,000 units. A part of the collection can be seen in the museum’s permanent exposition covering antiquity to the present day: ethnomedicine, the Middle Ages and Renaissance, medicine in the 18th–20th century, medicine in Latvia and space medicine. The museum also hosts a variety of public events and thematic exhibitions revealing and contextualising the development of medicine and its association with world history, social history and art. The museum is one of the three largest museums of its type in the world.
