Jeanne Kamptchouang

"Giblets" (2019–ongoing)

Installation

For the installation "Giblets", the artist gathered used and abandoned chairs and other objects found across the market and sourced from the local community to form a reconstructed congress for future friendships.

As Jeanne Kamptchouang describes, a chair symbolizes a place one occupies in life, and finding a chair is like finding one’s mission in life which is an ongoing quest. Simultaneously, chairs also hold connotations of power, as politicians are often referred to as “sitting in chairs” or “losing a chair.”

Through dismantling the chairs in an open workshop space and re-mantling them again in a different constellation just across the room, the artist is trying to break the logic of limited seats and exclusion, opening up the conference to collective dreaming and discussion where everyone has a place.

Jeanne Kamptchouang's work can also be seen in the sister-exhibition Long-distance Friendships at the 14th Kaunas Biennial.
